A gruelling cycle ride along the shores of Lake Malawi, from Cape Maclear across the border into northern Mozambique.
My Message
I set up Mission Malawi back in 2003, and I can hardly believe we're preparing for our 4th expedition already! So far, 54 people have taken part in the 3 previous expeditions, and we've raised a staggering £250,000 along the way - money which is being well-spent in ActionAid's HIV projects, specifically in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The first expedition, in March 2004 saw 10 Manchester-based cyclists making their journey from Lilongwe to Mzuzu, in the north of Malawi. That expedition raised over £40,000. Following from the success of the first trip, Mission Malawi 2 saw 34 people cycling, hiking and kayaking their way through southern Malawi in March 2006 - an event which raised over £127,000. Then, in May 2008, a team of 16 people cycled over 400km and walking through one of Malawi's national parks, visiting orphanages and care centres en route.
Mission Malawi 4 is due to take place in 2010, departing London on 9th May for 2 weeks. It's a gruelling cycle ride along the shores of Lake Malawi, taking in 7 days in Mozambique. Fundraising started on 1st December 2008 with an amazing concert at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, marking the 21st International World AIDS Day. Sir Mark Elder conducted The Halle Orchestra and Choirs in a performance of Faure's Requiem and a brand new piece of music comissioned for the event - a secular requiem, setting poignant and emotional words by Jackie Kay MBE, with music by Craig Urquhart, Colin Matthews, David Horne, Bechara el Khoury, Niel van der Watt, Marc Yeats and Errollyn Wallen. What lies ahead now? Who can say - if the previous fundraising activities are anything to go by, we could have car-boot sales, comedy nights, slave auctions, mango jam and naked calendars to look forward to!
Please dig deep and donate anything you can afford. This money will help some of the many millions of people in Africa who are struggling to cope with the day to day effects of HIV/AIDS. Thank you so much. If you would like to join us for Mission Malawi 4 there are still plenty of spaces left - just drop me a line for more details.
