Corporate Challenge - Morrocco May 2008
Part of Gibraltar corporate challenge 2008
Congratulations to our 41 intrepid trekkers from 6 companies in Gibraltar who took part in the Gibraltar Corporate Challenge 2008, a gruelling four day trek through the heart of Morocco’s Rif Mountains.

Over 4 days the group followed ancient Berber pathways making their way through the stunning landscape of the Talessemtane National Park all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.
Undeterred by the weather and a nasty bug the teams trekked in high spirits motivating each other with smiles, laughter and sweets through the long, hot climbs and never-ending steep rocky descents passing on their way through remote rural hamlets, waved on by local villagers and children.
After a challenging, but fun packed four days, the intrepid teams finally arrived at the sea crossing the finish line, tired but rewarded by their achievements safe in the knowledge the had raised a phenomenal £80,000 raised for ActionAid’s work!
Thank you to all who took park in the challenge and to those who supported and sponsored their fundraising efforts!
The Commission team is made up of 8 members of the Fiduciary, Banking and Insurance divisions and we have volunteered to take part in this venture to try and help people in greater need than ourselves. A 4 day trek across the Rif mountains in Morocco will take place during May 2008 will cover over 70km, visiting local orphanages and aid centres and finding out more about the issues being faced by the local people.

Gibraltar Corporate Challenge to Morocco
In aid of ActionAid
25-28 May 2008
The FSC team who have of course already began a rigorous training schedule thanks to Kieran (running every lunch time to the lighthouse is easy right!?) will be taking on a challenge that will push even the strongest of us to our limits. For the girls it will mean being taken away from their biggest comforts, no not their men, but the ease of access to the shops, baths and makeup!! For the men it will be a time for them to prove just how strong they really are, whilst also being taken away from home comforts (in some cases their wife’s cooking).
The 70kms trek that takes place in Morocco will be a physical and mental challenge but the rewards that come from this challenge far out weight the struggle that we may at times endure.
The trek that takes place over four days begins from the mountain base of Chefchouen, a Rift Mountain town of approximately 20,000 people. We will stay in a basic hostel, with some bathroom facilities, a luxury that will be short lived before heading off on our first days trek into the surrounding Rift Mountain valleys. This part of the trek will give us all a chance to reflect on our own lives and the differences between the simplistic Moroccan rural lives. Whilst on the trek we will have a chance to try home cooked Berber food, and visit a remote Berber village dependent on rudimentary agriculture practice and of course live in what at times will be considered difficult living conditions. We will also get a chance to see the impoverished farm communities of the lowlands whilst we head on our journey to the sea. Heading back to Gibraltar on the Sunday we will no doubt reflect upon what we have seen and how lucky we really are.
The team would like money raised to be donated to two projects that have unanimously been decided.
Malawi HIV/Aids
Malawi has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world and one of the highest numbers of HIV/AIDS orphans. These children have to go through the unimaginable trauma of watching their parents die, and are often left alone to care for themselves and their younger brothers and sisters.
The money raised from this trip will contribute to a project that is setting up a centre for children affected by HIV/AIDS and will provide them with healthcare, testing facilities, access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatments, basic education, vocational training and emotional support. The children will also benefit from a nutrition-feeding programme, which guarantees them a daily meal. The feeding programme will provide essential nutrition to children infected with HIV, and will slow the progression from HIV to AIDS

A future for Kandahar’s forgotten children Afghanistan Children
Millions of children around the world have to work to support themselves and their families. In Kandahar City, southern Afghanistan, more than 32,000 school-aged children are working on the city streets. They spend their days scavenging through rubbish, collecting metal, polishing shoes or selling water. On average these children will earn less than 65p per day, and will often work for up to 14 hours without food or rest.
Monies raised from our trip will help to set up support centres for 300 working children in Kandahar City. The children will learn to read and write, and to do maths, computer classes, sewing, tailoring and mechanics. Children will learn vocational skills so that they can find better employment for the future.

We would be very grateful if you would be kind enough to help us raise enough money to reach our target and beyond by donating online. We also have some up and coming events in order to help us reach the target so please keep updated and join in as much as you can.
Please remember that 100% of the money donated through this site or given to the FSC in person will go directly to ActionAid itself.
Your money can make a real difference to those who have nothing.
