Gathering strength - exciting and slightly funny blog

22 Aug 2008

I have just read the blog of the round the world cyclists which is amazing.  I reckon mine is pretty mundane so I am going to try to make this one exciting.

I have been battling various illnesses since the last marathon which was excruciatingly painful at the end. I have had bronchitis for 4/6 weeks,   hypoglycemia and an epic bad tummy and bowels bug which tested the powers of the local sewage system not to mention the powers of our dog to stay alive in the polluted atmosphere.  I have permanent osteoarthritis wherebye I seize up after sitting awhile. I have acid reflux which makes my throat sore and wakes me up.

I am a Grandad and we have visited our one year old grandchild Sammy who is amazingly lovely and a genius.  I discovered I had not fogotten how to handle a pooey nappy.

Still I am training - what a hero - and modest as well!

I am cross training three times per week - mainly cyling on the trainer in my shed amongst the junk. I am doing a half marathon this weekend so I'll keep you posted.  I am steady at 20 miles per week run and my back is limiting itself to an ache on the right side once I get going so I'll keep my fingers crossed. The doc has confirmed osteoarthritis.  Apparently nearly all folk get it as they get older.  Why didn't anyone tell me?   I spend about 40 minutes every night on my carpet doing core stability exercises.  The dog sees this as an opportunity to make overtures to me.  ( He does this to anyone on the carpet so he is not fussy).  Unfortunately his feelings are not reciprocated so he is doomed to rejection.  I will not go into too many details but I will say he sticks his wet tongue in your ear which is pretty yucky is you don't move fast enough.

Fundraising is nearly at a standstill but I will start again.  I wonder how the lovely action aid team are doing getting runners for next year.  Is anyone recruited yet Jenny?

My running buddy and daughter Mary has been diagnosed with a stress fracture which is very hard for her as she was going to run the Nottingham Marathon.  She is one gutsy lady.
