New Year Holiday and battling with the cold, bad chests and injuries

30 Dec 2007

We are away this week in out on a farm near Melton Mowbray for our daughter’s 29th birthday.   All the family are here including our new grandchild.  Today Mary and I ran a gentle 6 miles through the Vale of Belvoir.  We did a one minute walk every 4 minutes.  Mary is struggling with a bad shin injury and I am working on my right SI joint not to mention a bad chest.  What a gang of old crocks!

Never mind I am feeling pretty good tonight.

Yesterday’s run left me quite chesty and headachy in the night.  Did I overdo it?  The night itself was busy with new dad Phil wandering the night time corridor with wide awake Sam who gave me a big cheesy smile.  Panadol at about 5am gave me a nice extra two hours sleep.

New Years eve and Susan’s birthday party.  It is nearly 9pm and bleary eyed Sam has still not gone to sleep.  The rest of our family are playing Wii.

I had a go on Mary’s new step walker.  This is very tough on your thighs and I reckon would be great for strengthening my thighs and calves for hill work.  I did about 650 steps and then was stopped by a nose bleed.   My back is really bad today.  We saw in the New Year with a wonderful and hilarious mass game of Trivial pursuit.

New year’s day today and we are all exhausted including Bertie our dog.   I am still battling the bad chest and today was cold, cloudy and damp. I chose to have a long afternoon sleep rather than brave the outside world and did about a 170 steps before the new machine started groaning and squeaking and I had to give it up as it was awaking the sleeping masses.

Oh dear I succumbed to the biscuits and chocolate cake I hope without too much damage.  Tomorrow I plan to run – I hope -  six miles although the forecast is for very cold weather with heavy snow moving north later on in the week.  I wonder if all you runners are doing really well on your training.

Ok the forecast is for light snow tomorrow afternoon but I will live with that.  Mary bought a  V fit stepper from Argos  ( £13 and fantastic value)  and because it was so cold outside I did a 70 minute workout on the stepper ( 1000 calories and 7000 steps)  to a Nike Ipod treadmill workout.  I am hoping I did not overdo it and have the slightest of  calf strains. This was in place of a six mile run in temperatures of about two degrees and a stiff easterly wind which I reckon was a bridge too far for someone recovering from bronchitis.  I need to build leg strength for hill running.

My back is quite a bit better today.

My chest is quite a bit better.

It is even colder today – a bit below freezing and light snow.  It is really dark at 3pm.

I reckon another hour on the step machine is called for.  I go an email from Jayson – a fellow actionaid runner who told me he had run 40 minutes in the cold – a brave man!

I did have  another workout on the stepper – very slow and one hour ( 2500 steps and 375 cals).  I feel good this evening with my chest quite a bit better and little back pain just for now.  I am still succumbing to the odd choccy biccy or two – oops.
