About me

Hi, My name is Rebecca (Becci) and I am a 25 year old Construction Engineer/Manager (with Bouygues UK)living and working in North London.

I am originally from Handsacre near Lichfield in Staffordshire and still have plenty of family in that area.

I am off to Nepal at the end of October this year to help build houses with the Kamaiya people living in Bardia near Nepalganj in North-West Nepal.

These people were stuck in bonded labour (a form of slavery) in order to pay off debts from previous generations, which as time passed, grew so that it was never possible to clear the debt. In recent years the Nepali government outlawed this practice, 'freeing' the kamaiya people. however, these people have now found themselves thrown off the land they had lived on all their lives and left without any shelter, or way to earn a living.

ActionAid's work in this area focuses on helping these people to build their own homes, supplying building materials and training, as well as providing the expertise to build long lasting suitable homes and also educating these people in their rights regarding land ownership - allowing the Kamaiya people to really improve their lives and future prospects.

I will not be taking away work from the local people in Nepal, just helping them with whatever is needed. The most important thing for me to do is raise money for this cause, to fund the building materials and necessary staff required to really make a differnce in these communities.

Some of the work I may be involved in could include:
Digging foundations
Clearing land
Laying bricks or blocks
Plastering and Painting
Installing windows, door frames etc
Mixing concrete & mortar

Hopefully you will recognise that this is a very worthy cause and that I will have to work hard for my sponsorship money! All the money I raise will go to ActionAid to support them in this work and all the other projects they are involved in. To be able to take part in the challenge and make a real difference to the lives of the Kamaiya people, I need to raise £3,100 in sponsorship by the end of September!

Wish me luck for the challenge ahead, and please show your support! Donations can be gratefully received here online, or on my traditional sponsorship form, for which I can collect cash or cheques.

Don't forget to tick the GiftAid box if you are a UK taxpayer - that way your money is worth even more to ActionAid! Thank You!!
