This is the fundraising page relating to Marius and Anna Carboni’s climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. We reached the summit on 26 September 2007, after a hard seven days of climbing and camping on the mountain, preceded by a visit to some ActionAid projects near Dar es Salaam. Read on for information about our challenge and our aims in raising funds for ActionAid, and please do sponsor us.
My Message
On 20 September we set off up the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with a group of like-minded and adventurous trade mark lawyers. The next six days were spent trekking, clambering, camping and acclimatising to the altitude of the mountain, in preparation for our summit attempt. On 26 September, we reached Uhuru Point, - at 19,340 feet (5,895 metres) above sea level, the highest point in Africa. We then recovered in what must be the highest campsite in Africa (at 18,700 feet/5,700 metres), tucked up in our sleeping bags in the volcanic crater. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, the world’s highest free-standing mountain, and one of the largest volcanoes (currently inactive, we were assured).
We did this not only as something exciting to experience for ourselves, but also to raise some money for ActionAid, with the hope of targeting the funds raised towards its work in Tanzania. By asking you to sponsor us, we want to help to raise awareness of the plight of the millions of people who live in extreme deprivation around the world and in particular in Africa. We also want to give something back to the people of Tanzania for letting us climb its amazing mountain and (after we got back down) visit one of its safari parks.
This autumn is the 21st anniversary of our first involvement with ActionAid, which we began by taking the small step of sponsoring a child in India. Several children later, we were asked to support community projects, where ActionAid's priorities are HIV/AIDS treatment, food rights, education, women's rights, emergencies and democratic governance. We share ActionAid's vision of “a world without poverty in which every person can exercise their right to a life of dignity”.
We have made an arrangement with ActionAid whereby 70% of the funds that we raise will go to ActionAid projects in Tanzania and the other 30% will go to ActionAid UK’s funds for distribution to their projects anywhere in the world according to need. The day before we started our mountain challenge, we visited some ActionAid projects close to Dar Es Salaam in eastern Tanzania, to see for ourselves how the charity’s funds are spent with local communities.
