I'm joining actionaid to help me raise money for a great cause. A good friend of mine from university, Vicky Buchanan, was tragically killed in an accident last October. She was a very dear friend and to try and make something good come out of this tragedy her fiance, family and friends have set up a water development project delivered by Actionaid in Ethiopia in her memory. Vicky's Water Project aims to raise £226,000 to enable the sustainable supply of clean water to over 18,000 people in Lera Town and the surrounding area. Over 200 of Vicky's friends and family are running the Great North Run on 30th September to raise funds for this excellent cause, and create a lasting legacy for Vicky. I am 29 years old, and live in London. I went to Newcastle University where I had the best time with the greatest bunch of friends. At Newcastle University I met Vicky Buchanan, and over the next 9 years we became great friends. Vicky was a very special person - beautiful, intelligent, patient, kind and always happy. Tragically Vicky died last year in a cycling accident. I, and all her friends, miss her every day. On 17th October 2006 my fiancé Vicky was killed by a lorry whilst bicycling to work. She was loved dearly by so many and her loss left a huge void. In the face of this, through the enthusiasm and goodwill of so many, the idea of Vicky’s Water Project came about in the hope that something positive could spring from our loss. Vicky had spent much time in Africa studying water development and this seemed a fitting legacy to her. On the day that Vicky was killed she was carrying £10.88 and these were the very first funds paid in to Vicky’s Water Project. On these foundations it was the intention of Vicky’s family, friends and supporters to write a new chapter in her life. Thanks to the incredible efforts of so many over £520,000 was raised and means that construction has begun on a water project that will bring clean running water to over 20,000 people in and around Lera, Ethiopia. Since then a further £50,000 has been raised to faciliate the construction of classrooms in Lera to house the additional children now able to attend school. Through the Lera Town Fund their continues to be the opportunity to change this small corner of the world in a sustainable and impactful way and in doing so change the lives of many thousands of people.

It is a cause that would have made Vicky incredibly proud, and to help raise the projected total of £225,000, over 200 of Vicky's family and friends – including myself – have put ourselves forward to do the Great North Run in September. Thanks for visiting myactionaid website. In 2005 I ran the Great North Run for the first time with a group of friends on a Sunny September Day. Vicky was one of the gang that celebrated our success and enthusiatically planned our future running endeavours until the early hours of the next morning. We vowed to do it again ..but faster! Vicky's Water Project is an idea conceived by Vicky and a fitting legacy that Adam has taken to a whole new level through this event in her loving memory. I ran the Great North Run on 2 previous occasions with Vicky and have immensely happy and fond memories of competing along side her. I even allowed her to beat me to the post in our second run! I had promised myself after the 2006 Great North Run that I would never do it again, citing a dodgy knee and laziness as my excuses. I am now dusting off the running shoes and those rather fetching running shorts to ensure that our memories are focused on Vicky as we fondly remember her. On 17th October 2006 a friend of mine Vicky Buchanen was hit by a truck while cycling to work and killed. In order to ensure that the memory of Vicky will live on her fiancé (with the help of Action Aid) has set up a Vicky’s Water Project with the aim of providing clean, fresh water to the people of Lera Town, Ethopia, and the five surrounding villages. A project that would be close to Vicky’s heart as she spent time in Ethopia setting up a similar project in Dalocha. To raise the funds for this project, 200 of Vicky’s friends and family are gathering together to run the Great North Run, this is the largest group of friends to ever take place in this run which I think is proof to how many people’s lives Vicky touched. It is a half marathon (just over 13 miles) but with a lot of steep hills to run up so it is still a tough challenge particularly as I have never run that far in my life, let alone up hills. But it will hopefully improve the lives of nearly 20,000 people and so prove a fitting memorial to Vicky’s life. When Vicky left for work on the day she died she had £10.88 with her and these were the very first funds paid into ‘Vicky’s Water Project’. We are hoping to turn this into £226,000, the amount needed to complete the entire project. I would hugely appreciate any donation you feel you could make. I only really knew Vics for about 4 years, but in that time I discovered what an amazing person she was. Adam, Vicky's fiance and Vicky's family have set up a charity called Vicky's Water Project in order to raise money to get water into a village in Ethiopia - a cause that was close to Vicky's heart. To support this truely incredible charity over 200 of Vicky's family and friends are running the Great North Run this September in Newcastle. When I gave THEM the camera they became more confident and this picture is the result. I've seen ActionAid's work in India for myself. While preparing her dissertation in 1999 Vicky worked with ActionAid on a water project providing clean running water to Dalocha in Ethiopia. Vicky's Water Project, established in her memory, has worked with ActioAid to identify a similar Ethiopian venture that Vicky's Water Project could support. On 30th September 2007, I will attempt to run the Great North Run for Vicky’s Water Project Charity. The charity, which focuses on bringing clean water to Ethiopian villages, was set up following the tragic death of Vicky Buchanan in October 2006. Over 200 friends and family have committed to run the 13.1 miles which makes VWP the third most represented charity amongst the 50,000 participants. Having attended university in Newcastle and run the previous three half marathon’s, the event was particularly close to Vicky. On the day Vicky left for work on her bike on 17th October 2006 she had £10.88 with her. These funds were the first paid in to Vicky’s Water Project. Having recently toppled the £100,000 mark, the aim is raise £226,000 which should help in bringing clean water to more than 20,000 people in the Dalocha region of Ethiopia. The focus of Vicky’s university dissertation was on the provision of fresh water in Ethiopia and the opportunity to continue her sterling work would be a fitting tribute to the energy and enthusiasm that she dedicated to the issue. In addition to the Great North Run, I am jointly organising Vicky’s Super Eights, an 8 a-side cricket tournament held in Queens Park, London on the 18th August 2007. It promises to be an exciting occasion with a BBQ and bar on site, alongside a stellar raffle containing some exceptional cricket and sporting memorabilia. Vicky, a good friend of mine from Newcastle days, was bicycling to work in London on 17th October last year when she was tragically knocked down by a lorry and killed. Her fiance, Adam Chataway, has set up a fund in her memory concerned with bringing water to some of the most deprived areas of Ethiopia. The project involves capping springs, laying pipelines and establishing water distribution points at a cost of nearly £250,000. I am proud to be associated with this worthy cause and have agreed to take part in the Great North Run on 30th September. My aim is to raise over £1000 for Vicky's Water Project. I therefore have two major hurdles to overcome. Firstly, to run a half marathon- a distance that I am certainly not built for and far exceeds my usual brief sprints on the football pitch! Secondly, to raise this significant sum of money in the next few weeks. Unfortunatley you can not help me with the first of these but please do support me in the second. This really is such a worthwhile cause and she was a wonderful person who was passionate about the development of safe water in this part of the world. On the 30th September 2007, I will be attempting to complete the 13. something miles of the Great North Run. For those of you who know me well, you will understand that this is not something I would undertake without good reason. The VERY VERY good reason is that I am running to raise money for 'Vickys Water Project', a charity set up by Adam Chataway in memory of his fiance Vicky Buchanan. The purpose of this fundraising page is to gather funds to support Vicky's Water Project. I will be running / crawling the Great North Run. Vicky was killed by a lorry whilst cycling to work on 17th Oct 2006. She is loved dearly by so many and her loss leaves a huge void. It was felt that some good should come from an event so tragic. Vicky had studied Geography at Newcastle University and then a M Phil in Water Development. She spent many months in South Africa and Ethiopia. We have a clearly defined practical project. While researching her dissertation Vicky worked with ActionAid on a water project providing clean running water to Dalocha in Ethiopia. We have indentified a similar project to support. Although I will suffer a great deal of pain in training and the completion of the eventual run, my greatest achievement will be the contribution I make to this project. In the face of this, through the enthusiasm and goodwill of so many, the idea of Vicky’s Water Project came about in the hope that something positive could spring from our loss. Vicky left us with many things and one was the knowledge of what would represent a fitting legacy in her memory. While at Newcastle University studying for a geography degree and then an M Phil in Water Development, she spent many months in Ethiopia and South Africa. Therefore it seemed right to identify a cause within the area for which she had such a passion. Our hope was to find one clearly defined practical project that would give all its supporters a clear sense of ownership and that would leave a really worthwhile long term legacy. While preparing her dissertation in 1999 Vicky worked with ActionAid on a water project providing clean running water to Dalocha in Ethiopia and we have worked with ActionAid to identify a similar Ethiopian venture that Vicky’s Water Project could support. At a cost of £115,000 clean water can be brought to some 10,000 people in Lera and Demala Town and the infrastructure will be laid to reach many more as funds become available. If, as we hope, £226,000 can be raised, the entire project can be completed and the lives of nearly 20,000 human beings will be transformed for the better. On the day that Vicky was killed she was carrying £10.88 and these were the very first funds paid into Vicky’s Water Project. On these foundations it is the intention of Vicky’s family, friends and supporters to write a new chapter in her life.

Since Vicky's tragic death last October I have been massively moved and inspired by her Fiance - Adam Chataways dedication bringing something positive from our loss by raising money for 'Vicky's water project' which is set up to provide clean water to areas in Ethiopia At a cost of 115,000 pounds clean water can be brought to some 10,000 people in Lera and Demala Town and the infrastructure will be laid to reach many more as funds to become available. The big event being the Great North Run. The big run is on 30th September - to be honest, i know i'm running for the most amazing cause ever imaginable but i'm still dreading the actual run! I have set up this page to help raise funds for Vicky's Water Project, a project that will bring clean running water to over 18,000 people in Lera town and surrounding towns, Ethiopia. The project has been established to commemorate Vicky Buchanan, a friend I met whilst studying at Newcastle University. Vicky was tragically killed in October 2006 whilst cycling to work in London. Her fiance, Adam, in a feat for which I will forever be in admiration, decided to channel the negative energies into positive and set about orchestrating something both meaningful and spectacular to remember her by. As a result of this, I am running 13 miles - alongside over 200 others of her friends and family - on September 30th as a part of the Great North Run in order to raise money for a cause dear to Vicky's heart. That cause is a water project in Ethiopia. In 1999, as part of her MPhil in Water Development, Vicky worked on a water project providing clean running water to Dalocha in Ethiopia. Adam has put an enormous amount of work into identifying a similar venture which Vicky's Water Project can support, and with your generosity (and my blisters!) we hope to raise GBP226,000 in order to bring clean water and infrastructure to 20,000 residents of Lera Town and Demala and their surrounding villages. 78% of Ethiopians do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. On September 30th I completed the BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle-upon-Tyne – the world’s largest half-marathon. I ran with 190 others in memory of Vicky Buchanan, a friend from university who was tragically killed while bicycling to work in London last October. We were the largest group ever to run in the Great North Run for one charity - some of you may have seen us on the BBC?! As a huge part of my family's life (Vicky was engaged to marry my brother in September this year after they had met eight years previously at Newcastle University) she is desperately missed by us, as she is by everyone who knew and loved her. Since Vicky's death Adam has been leading a project, carried out by Action Aid, to raise £226,000 with a view to bringing clean water to more than 20,000 in the Dalocha region of Ethiopia. Vicky's dissertation was on the provision of fresh water in Ethiopia and as such this is a very appropriate tribute and a great way to generate great positives from such a tragedy. On the 17th October 2006 Vicky Buchanan was killed whilst cycling to Stamford Bridge where she worked for Chelsea. Vicky (Tor) is Zoë’s cousin. The last time we saw Tor was at our wedding the month before, it was a wonderful day shared with all the family and friends. The fun lasted into the early hours, after drinking and dancing with the rest of the family, Tor discarded her kitten heels for a very competitive game of table tennis... using a beer tray as a bat (Tor had managed to break the bat earlier with a rather enthusiastic shot!). When Tor was growing up, both Zoë and her sister Sarah spent many happy holidays with Tor cycling around Nursery Place, having picnics and putting on plays for Tor's mum and dad – not quite a West End production! Both of us are running the Great North Run (21k) to raise money for Vicky’s Water Project, which will create a lasting legacy in memory of Tor. As a student and a postgraduate, Vicky spent several months working with water projects in Ethiopia and South Africa. On the 17th October 2006 Vicky was killed by a lorry whilst cycling to work. On the 17th October 2006 Vicky Buchanan was killed whilst cycling to Stamford Bride where she worked for Chelsea. Vicky was my closest cousin. She was 28 when she died and was due to get married the following year. Her death was a huge shock to the family and she is deeply missed. In her memory a charity has been set up called Vickys Water project. I never used to do any exercise (I had a gym membership but spent most of the time in the sauna!) so when Adam, Vicky's fiance, suggested at her memorial service we all run the Great North Run in her memory and for her charity I was the last of the family to sign up. But i'm glad I did and VWP made history by being the largest collection of family and friends running in a race. For Vickys charity I have now run: Great North Run Sept 07 London Marthon April 08 Paris Marathon April 09 (hopefully!) and have so far raised just under £4,000 Please sponsor me as much as you can for such a good cause. Hi All, Thank You for looking at my page and sponsoring me. I'll be running the Great North Run this September for Vicky's Water project with several work colleagues. I like to think I am relatively fit, going to the gym 3 times a weeks, walking to work each day but running is not my forte and as any of my friends will know (particularly my boyfriend who's dealt with my complaining) I've suffered several injuries and I'm strugggling with running. But I will not be beaten!!! To update you all I ran the Bupa Capital Help A London Child Race yesterday (Sunday 15th July) and I think I did it pretty well (I currently have a cold ;-( although on a good note my leg injured leg seems to have finally forgiven me and is letting me run painfree! Hurray!) I completed the 10k race in 1hr and 11seconds. I'm feeling very pleased with myself as it was my first race. Her loss has left a massive void in the lives of so many and the setting up of Vicky's Water Project will ensure that something positive can be taken from this tragedy whilst allowing Vicky's memory to live on. Vicky's Water Project aims to provide clean water to more than 20,000 people in the Dalocha region of Ethiopia. Vicky was carrying £10.66 on the day she was killed and these were the very first funds paid towards the project. It is hoped that £226,000 can be raised and I intend to provide £1000 of this. As many of you will know on the 17th Oct 2006 a very close friend of both my wife and i, Vicky Buchannan, was tragically killed in a cycling accident in London. Since then in excess of 200 of her family and friends have set about the task to raise money for the African water charity that Vicky established before she died. Through a number of fundraising events the ball has already started rolling toward our minimum target of £200k. The main event however, is for us all to run the Great North Run at the end of Sept and this is something i am honoured to take part in. On the 30th September I shall be "attempting" to run a half Marathon in Newcastle (The Great North Run 13.1 miles) As most of you know, I am completely unfit...so all of the sponsor money I am hoping to raise will be hard earned. I aim to raise money for Vicky's Water project which is a charity that was set up when a colleague in work's cousin was killed tragically on the way to work one day last year. The target we need to reach is a whopping £226K, which will provide clean running water to some 20,000 people in Dalocha, Ethiopia. I recently entered a City 5K race...6500 entered and I came 4352nd! So you can tell the training might need to step up a notch! However I am unperturbed....I shall finish the half marathon on the 30th of September, even if I have to be dragged across the finish line. One year on, and I've decided to have another crack at the Great North Run! The run takes place on 5th October, and this time I'm hoping I can enjoy the 13+ miles without incurring an injury! Last year was an incredible experience on so many levels. By returning to the GNR I hope to continue raising money towards the Lera Town Fund. ActionAid and the people of the Lera Town community will use the fund on vital projects prioritised by the people of Lera, such as education, healthcare and income generation that are so desperately needed, and can be focused upon now that - thanks to Vicky's Water Project - the most basic and important of foundations is in place – water.
