Al's Nepal House Build Challenge

Part of First Hand Experience Nepal 2008

Congratulations to our fantastic team of 22 who have just returned from the stunning magical kingdom of Nepal where they worked alongside a local community building vital family homes.

From the moment they signed up and started raising their sponsorship right through to digging foundations, lifting bricks and mixing cement the team all worked really hard, with enthusiasm and dedication so thank you so much for that!

Throughout the week everyone got to know the villagers they were working with and despite the physical work and long days in the heat the days were full of smiles, laughter and fun as everyone pulled together to get the job done.

"The whole thing has been the most amazing experience of my life. I feel so privileged to have worked alongside such welcoming and lovely people." Grace Hall, Nepal 2008

At the end of the week the team had managed to get all 23 houses on the settlement started and the work they helped to achieve in five days would have normally taken the community 4-6 weeks to complete!

The team also raised over £78,000 for ActionAid's priority work, an amazing achievement! Their sponsorship will go towards funding ActionAid's priority work around the world to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of those living in poverty. Thank you so much to everyone who took part and to all your sponsors for making ths possible.

We are running the event again in 2009. If you would like to find out more just click on the link below to be sent a full brochure and registration form.

My Message

In November 2008 I will be travelling to North West Nepal with ActionAid to build houses!

In order to take part in this opportunity to really help some of the world's poorest people I need to raise £3000. This money will pay not only for my accommodation (a tent) and my food (rice and lentils apparently) this money pays for the bricks and mortar we will be building the houses out of as well as professionals to make sure I don't injure myself whilst building!

The people I will be helping are part of the Kamaiya tribe, former bonded labourers (slaves basically), released by the Nepalese government in July 2000, but forced off the lands they used to work, leaving them without homes. I will be part of a programme ActionAid have been running for many years to build new houses for them.

For myself I am hoping to get an understanding of a culture completely divorced from anything I've experienced before. I am excited by the prospect of seeing a beautiful and mysterious country up close. I'll be keeping this site updated so check back for news on my exploits!

Please sponsor me to take part in this life changing experience!
