Discovery Summer's donation is enabling the building and equipping of the Kola Tree Community School, Freetown, Sierra Leone to get off the ground. The school will be for 300 children, with 6 classrooms, a well and latrines. The community are greatly involved and will be running the project to ensure sustainabilty.

If any Discovery Summer students, their families, teachers or friends would like to get involved with this project, any help and support would be greatly appreciated.
To give you some ideas of what a small donation can do to help, please take a look at the shopping list below:
Shopping List
£8 could cover the costs of a child learning kit containing a school bag, exercise book, pen, pencil, eraser, plastic ruler and sharpener.
£10 could cover the costs of purchasing 12 skipping ropes to keep children fit and active
£24 could purchase two footballs to allow children to participate in recreational activities.
£39 could cover the costs of a basic teacher’s kit containing text books and learning materials.
£50 could provide basic learning materials for one class of 30 children.
£100 could provide 12 chairs and 7 desks for school children made by local craftsmen.
£150 could cover the costs of setting up a school library which could provide the facility for children to borrow reading materials to improve their literacy.
£198 could cover the costs of training community water well caretakers on water management, ensuing that repairs and maintenance and carried out and general sanitation issues covered including water chlorination.
£250 could cover the costs of an education school kit containing chalk, clocks and batteries, black board paint and brush, cello tape, scissors, rope, pencils and sharpeners, football, volley ball and net and a pump for the balls.
£350 could cover the costs of training of a School Management Committee covering
general school management and leadership. The training will link committee members with other stakeholders, including local government officials, the district education office, the Head Teacher, teaching staff and the wider community.
£2,000 could cover the construction costs of 3 toilets which would encourage improved sanitation practices. For children, this continues the process of learning about keeping good health.
£3,000 could provide funds for the construction of a 20 metre water well, which would supply the school and surrounding community with a source of safe drinking water and notably reduce the occurrence of water borne diseases.
