Mr. Barber's Malawi Mission
Part of Mission Malawi 3
16 motivated, committed and very energetic supporters took on Mission Malawi 3 in May 2008. They cycled along streets lined with smiling children, they trekked through the bush and they visited ActionAid's HIV/AIDS work and met the people whose lives they are transforming. This is the third Mission Malawi challenge and between the three challenges, they have raised an incredible £250,000 for ActionAid's HIV & AIDS work in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
For information on how you can get involved in the next challenge in 2010 email us.

The Mission Malawi team will be cycling over 400 miles down the Dedza pass, through the Great Rift Valley (visiting some of Action Aid's projects along the way), then kayaking across Lake Malawi via Mumbo Island, before climbing and hiking along some of Mozambique's most remote freshwater coastline - the ancient 'Lake Highway'. Ultimately, Mission Malawi 2008 has challenged itself to beat the £127,000 raised by Mission Malawi 2006.
My Message
Around the world, HIV/AIDS kills over 8,000 people every day, most of them in poor countries like Malawi and Mozambique. In Malawi, the disease affects almost one in five people aged 15 to 49 and accounts for more than two thirds of hospital deaths. In Mozambique, the situation is equally shocking with over 1.3 million people fighting the HIV and AIDS, further exacerbating the legacy of a bloody, 15-year civil war. Abject poverty and international trade legislation mean that the drugs to treat HIV are too expensive for most people, the result being that parents die and children are left both orphaned and heads of the family, bringing up siblings. In Malawi alone, there are over a million ‘AIDS orphans’ and nearly 90,000 children are living with the disease itself.
In May 2008, a team of 20 Action Aid volunteers will undertake a gruelling triathlon, raising money for and awareness about families and communities affected by HIV/AIDS in Malawi and Mozambique. The team will not only face physical challenges during the triathlon, but will also gain first-hand perspective on the extent of the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa and the types of amazing projects which Action Aid run. By taking part in the ‘Mission Malawi 2008’ challenge, the team aims to benefit the lives of people affected by HIV/AIDS, while raising awareness back home of the significance of the disease and its impact.
